Our Leadership

Starr McCaffery founded Sound Solutions in January 2004.  She is a 20-year veteran of the communications industry and has held management positions with global public relations agencies such as Edelman Worldwide and Porter Novelli International.  She began her career at a highly regarded Chicago firm, Public Communications, Inc. (PCI).

Starr specializes in corporate and brand message development and delivery.  She was part of a team that developed and refined a proven messaging process at Edelman, and led the team that developed the firm’s litigation support protocol.  She also has provided media and presentation training to a number of clients, and has assisted with presentation coaching for master’s candidates at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy.

Furthermore, her tenure in media relations and hands-on production experience enabled Starr to establish a solid track record for identifying strategic and effective communications vehicles for various target audiences, and expand her service offerings.  She co-founded a full-service commercial recording studiio, ALM Records, which now operates as a division of Sound Solutions, in 1999.  That same year, Starr ventured into the relatively new frontier of Web writing, when BlueCross/BlueShield Association relaunched its consumer site, bluecares.com, based on the messaging work she had done with the organization.

What began as "just another writing assignment" for her longterm client BCBSA became the starting point for Sound Solutions' Internet Marketing subspecialty as Starr developed her expertise in search engine optimization (SEO) and subsequently grew her experience from content development to complete site structure and management, including subdomain/blog sites and online advertising.

Starr's work has been recognized with several Publicity Club of Chicago Golden and Silver Trumpet Awards and International Association of Business Communicators Awards of Excellence, a Chicago-Midwest Emmy and an Inside PR Creativity in Public Relations Award (CIPRA).  Starr also was nominated in 1994, when she served as marketing communications manager for the Chicago Park District, for the Kathy Osterman Award recognizing the outstanding professional among nine municipal government agencies.

She is a Chicago native and a 1986 graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in English.
